Ceiling lighting is truly a big category in the home light fixture area. This is why people
love them because they can really find the perfect illumination fixture for their room or home exterior as
outdoor lighting.
There are many home lighting fixtures
of types and brands available on the market today with products having a wide range of prices starting
from the low $20 up to several hundreds of dollars a piece.
Some have regular light bulbs and others have energy efficient, electricity saving
bulbs.
However there is still a common factor that they all have:
They are hanging from the ceiling one way or another
So basically it is very easy to categorize the hundreds of different types simply because it
is hangs from the top, it is a ceiling light or ceiling lamp. However, there is a way to categorize them based
on a few characteristics common that range between the style and decor, the way they hang down or the material
type.
Here are just some of the main types that we will be covering in further articles more
in-depth.
Pendant lights - They are quite focused and let
the illumination on the very spot you need it. They are quite decorative in nature and if you need a set
of ceiling lights that easily combine functionality with the becautiful design aspect in areas such as a
bar, over a counter or in the office, these lights are for you.
Vintage inspired Tiffany pendant lights are very popular with many homeowners because
they are truly giving a beautiful ambient to any room. Pendant lighting
contains lamps that are
usually quite finely handcrafted and they can easily brighten up any room whether the furniture is modern,
traditional or country style.
Chandeliers - Chandeliers are maybe the most typical ceiling
lights for indoor known to man (and woman). They seem to be oldest types of hanging lamps ever and they
were very popular in the middle ages with the aristocracy in Europe, who was particularly fond was using
crystal chandeliers.
Nowadays you can find chandeliers
in various styles, from the
modern and contemporary to classic, traditional and even retro, in materials such as glass, crystal and
many others.
Sizes also differ greatly. You have the huge chandeliers that go well in big ball rooms and
the mini chandeliers that are perfect to illuminate a smaller bedroom with style. This is one ceiling lights
type that goes well in every room, from the living room, bedroom right until the hallway or foyer.
Flush mount ceiling lights - Flush
mounts
are great if you have lower
ceilings and they are particularly well suited for the bedroom or as bathroom ceiling lights, for hallways, foyer and outdoor such as
balcony or veranda.
S
ome have a beautiful base of rubbed bronze or chrome finish that
many people like, while others are simple or with a golden (pewter) or silver finish with a white glass
fixture. They are very elegant pieces that don't stand out like the chandeliers do.
Semi flush mount ceiling lights have a bit of a wiggle room between
the ceiling and the actual light fixture. They are also great in any room with low ceilings but many people
find them more decorative than the full flush mount light fixtures.
Recessed lights - Recessed lights, also called
downlights (or pot lights in Canadian English) give your room a very clean and streamlined look. They are
usually installed in a hollow opening of your ceiling and some have a black halo around them.
They don't stand out like other lighting types, they almost make you believe that the light
is shining right through a hole in the ceiling. The actual Recessed lighting
light fixture housing is
installed inside the ceiling to offer this particular appearance. Spot lights are also part of recessed
lights, however they are much smaller in size.
Kitchen lighting - While the kitchen lights
are not a light fixture type
per se, they have so many different lamps that are used for the cooking area that they should be mentioned
separately.
You can find lighting fixtures such as the already mentioned pendant lights and flush or
semi-flush lights, chandeliers and recessed lights, but also specialized lamps used mostly for the kitchen and
not all necessarily hanging from the ceiling such as track lighting, wall lights, pot racks and under-cabinet
lights.
