Flush mount ceiling lights - Flush mounts are great if you have lower ceilings and they are particularly well suited for the bedroom or as bathroom ceiling lights, for hallways, foyer and outdoor such as balcony or veranda.

Some have a beautiful base of rubbed bronze or chrome finish that many people like, while others are simple or with a golden (pewter) or silver finish with a white glass fixture. They are very elegant pieces that don't stand out like the chandeliers do.

Semi flush mount ceiling lights have a bit of a wiggle room between the ceiling and the actual light fixture. They are also great in any room with low ceilings but many people find them more decorative than the full flush mount light fixtures.

Recessed lights - Recessed lights, also called downlights (or pot lights in Canadian English) give your room a very clean and streamlined look. They are usually installed in a hollow opening of your ceiling and some have a black halo around them.

They don't stand out like other lighting types, they almost make you believe that the light is shining right through a hole in the ceiling. The actual Recessed lighting light fixture housing is installed inside the ceiling to offer this particular appearance. Spot lights are also part of recessed lights, however they are much smaller in size.

Kitchen lighting - While the kitchen lights are not a light fixture type per se, they have so many different lamps that are used for the cooking area that they should be mentioned separately.

You can find lighting fixtures such as the already mentioned pendant lights and flush or semi-flush lights, chandeliers and recessed lights, but also specialized lamps used mostly for the kitchen and not all necessarily hanging from the ceiling such as track lighting, wall lights, pot racks and under-cabinet lights.
